The City
of Industry, which is located in San Gabriel Valley, has the resources
to provide companies with skilled new workers and to upgrade the skills
of the existing workforce. The area starts out with a well-educated
workforce: Out of the total San Gabriel Valley population, 27.7 percent
have some college education. That's higher than in Los Angeles County
as a whole. To ensure that the workforce's skills match those of the
changing work environment, various organizations offer programs ranging
from basic employment and workplace skills to special skills and advanced
training for managers and executives.
High Schools:
The San Gabriel Valley's school districts graduate "job ready"
students. While programs vary from district to district, notable programs
provide specialized training in computers, multimedia and language skills.
Community-Based Education:
The San Gabriel Valley's five community colleges provide community-based
education and training programs tailored to the individual needs of
participating businesses. Working together as the Community College
Training Group, four of these colleges (Citrus,
Mt. San Antonio,
Pasadena City College
and Rio Hondo colleges)
received the prestigious Chancellor's Award for their joint program's
commitment to innovation and partnership.
Industry Specific Programs:
Recently, California State Polytechnic
University Pomona (Cal Poly) established the Apparel Technology
Research Center to help the area's clothing manufacturers compete in
a rapidly changing market. And, in response to the growing involvement
in foreign trade and the regional application for a Foreign Trade Zone
designation, the four-college Training Group created an innovative Foreign
Trade Zone Training Program for new entrepreneurs and existing businesses.
